2024 Type Trends
Like last year, Blaze Type brings you a retrospective of the past year, rich in encounters with new type designers and rich in production.
In a few figures, 2024 means:
23 new or updated fonts families
875 published fonts
13 new designers
The foundry’s catalog literally exploded in 2024: 875 fonts published or updated in 365 days, enough to feed you more than daily. Within this plethoric production, a few trends are emerging.
Catalog extension
One of our most important policies is to update our catalog, whether by extending the glyph set or varying the formats offered, notably with the generalization of Variable Fonts for more manageable and lightweight files. The new families on offer are increasingly versatile, with many releases exceeding 40 fonts files, establishing many families as future standards capable of playing as much a role in the titles of your documents as in the legal wording of contracts.
Indecisive Sans & Mono (40 fonts, Fred Witshire) is an example of this broadening of the spectrum, with a base of contemporary geometric lineal adapted into a Mono with strong character.
In the same way, Kyle & Kyle Mono (24 fonts, Alexander Rütten & Olivia Wood) offers an extended family between a linear mono typeface and a kind of lapidary with triangular serifs... All with a touch of typewritter, making the Mono version an obvious choice.
Silvana Text (10 fonts, Siri Lee Lindskrog) is the working text adaptation of its big sister, Silvana Display. The work involved not just an optical adaptation, but a complete overhaul of the design, the old-fashioned way, glyph by glyph.
Rules Gothic (90 styles, Matthieu Salvaggio, Léon Hugues, Guido Ferreyra, Malo Haffreingue) is a polished and refined version of Rules, with purer, tauter curves. This work demonstrates Blaze Type's determination to bring you products that are constantly evolving, whether in terms of file formats, glyphsets enabling the composition of numerous languages, or aesthetically with deep retouching.
Universalism first!
Extending the catalog to include different styles is a quest for universalism. Our new products are directly in line with this approach
Aman (72 fonts, Matthieu Salvaggio & Ferdinand Del Fabbro): Aman is a versatile serif typeface family, crafted to perform seamlessly across a wide range of sizes-from striking display headlines to fine, legible captions. Inspired by the lettering from the book Amen, this typeface brings together the timeless elegance of old-style designs like Plantin with the refined sophistication of transitional styles such as Times New Roman. Its most distinctive features are the baroque flourishes seen in the beaks and head serifs, while its gracefully arcing terminals lend a subtle, refined touch to the letterforms.
Pahin (36 fonts, Maksym Kobuzan): Pahin is an expressive flared serif that combines sharp forms with intricate contours. Its plasticity is inspired by the graceful curves of stems and flowers, creating vibrant and organic forms. Sharp elements contrast with soft and flowing lines, reminiscent of thorny thorns protecting delicate flowers or fruits. At the same time, Pahin inherits and is based on the tradition of calligraphy.
Pahin is distinguished by an abundance of loops, especially in the alternative set, which resemble, for example, a grapevine. These elements give the typeface freshness, flexibility and naturalness, making it ideal for use in large sizes, where its expressiveness is fully revealed.
Slab!
At Blaze Type, the main trend of 2024 has been to demonstrate our love for Slabs, whether traditional or Mono (Indecisive Mono, Kyle Mono). However, we're not able to remain confined to a stereotype, and our new releases go to great lengths to re-imagine the definition of what a Slab is.
Intermedial Slab (56 styles, Karol Mularczyk) is proof that slabs are one of the most interesting and under-exploited typographic genres: Slab, Slab Reliable, Classic, Didone.
The adaptability of Intermedial Slab makes it a powerful asset for creating cohesive and flexible frameworks within any design system. Whether for branding, editorial layouts, user interfaces, or print materials, this type family's range of styles allows for seamless integration across platforms. Designers can leverage its flexibility to craft visually engaging, responsive typographic solutions, making Intermedial Slab an essential tool for building unified, adaptive, and highly effective design systems.
Rules Slab (90 fonts, Matthieu Salvaggio, Léon Hugues, Tim Vanhille, Guido Ferreyra, Malo Haffreingue), on the other hand, is the modern Slab, less old-fashioned than the early nineteenth-century Slabs, but wiser than the Intermedial Slab. In short, it's a classic, dusted-off design that designers will love to push even further than our preconceived ideas.
Grotesk Passion
2023 had already been the year of the Sans Serif, with numerous releases (Surt, Homie, Digital Sans, Fusion, Routine, Relais, Neue Tarasque).
Eternal Collection (160 fonts, Matthieu Salvaggio, Malo Haffreingue) further develops this trend, offering a family starting with Compressed, ExtraCondensed, Condensed, SemiCondensed, Normal, SemiLarge, Large, Expended & Wide, all available in thin, Extralight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, Bold, ExtraBold, Black and its Italic variants.
Eternal Collection is a display font family that is designed for high-impact visual communication, this font family features a striking combination of serif detailing and high contrast proportions. With an extensive range of 162 styles, Eternal Collection offers a broad range of creative possibilities. The family includes variations in width, weight, and slant, allowing for nuanced typographic expression across various design contexts. From bold, commanding headlines to delicate, refined subheadings, this font family ensures that every design element can be tailored to the precise mood and tone you wish to convey. Choose from a full spectrum of widths, from compressed to wide, and a variety of weights, from thin to black. The inclusion of slant styles adds an extra dimension of flexibility for dynamic, forward-leaning typography.
Daimito (42 fonts, Karol Mularczyk) is a humasnist sans serif available in Condensed, Normal and Expanded, also in 7 weights and slanted rather than italic. Modern without being bland or neutral, it's just as well suited to logos, headlines and text. A must-have.
Daimito is the result of two years of research into sharp yet stable forms, positioned between the great but relatively young typographic styles of our modern times. The design incorporates elements of uncompromising neo-grotesque and strong stylisation characteristic of humanistic fonts like Gill Sans. Daimito is a child aware of its cultural heritage, looking boldly into the future with the eyes of an explorer.
Spinner Gothic (18 fonts, Guillaume Sbalchiero) offers a generous, strong Neo Geometric Sans. Reserved for crisp, high-impact titling, it rivals the New York belles of the early 20th century.
Drawing inspiration from printing craftsmanship and iconic American Gothic fonts of the early 20th century, Spinner Gothic exudes a timeless and classical charm, with the blackness of German Grotesk lettering. In tribute the designer's mothers maiden name 'Spinner', evoking association with textile spinning and woven fabric.
Condensed Passion
Probably as a fashion statement or a taste of the past, the Condensed Serifs of the phototypesetting era, present on the headlines of 1980s advertisements, are back in digital.
Collapse (8 fonts, Axel Keussel Andre) is austere and melancholic condensed serif, crafted with an air of stark pessimism. Loosely inspired by the iconic serif typeface seen in the opening titles of Neon Genesis Evangelion, it draws upon the haunting atmosphere of that series while quickly diverging into something more expressive, more severe.
Holise (16 fonts, Ines Davodeau) is a versatile typeface that masterfully blends modern and vintage aesthetics. Its condensed form is adorned with distinctive, spicy details on the serifs, giving it a unique and captivating character. This elegant font exudes sophistication, making it a perfect choice for adding flair and distinction to your titles and large-scale text. Whether you're aiming for a contemporary look or a classic feel, Holise brings originality and charm to any design, ensuring your work stands out with a touch of refinement.
