An Corp, or When Typography Became a World: Ultima Online

1997: A Persistent World and Its First Signs

In the late 1990s, when the public Internet was still in its infancy, Ultima Online opened a new chapter in video game history. Developed by Origin Systems and released in September 1997, the title was one of the very first persistent online worlds—a shared environment where thousands of players could live, trade, fight, and build together in real time. What we now take for granted was, at the time, a genuine revolution.

Behind this technological breakthrough, however, lay another, quieter form of craftsmanship: typography. In a game where most interactions relied on written text—dialogues, names, messages, menus—the shape of letters determined not only legibility but also immersion and world-building. Ultima Online went far beyond a single default font. It offered several, each carefully designed for specific uses: speech bubbles, character names, journals, or user interface menus. For the first time, typography became a true narrative component of the gaming experience.


Typographic Heritage: From Apple II Runes to the Bitmaps of Britannia

This typographic identity was not born from nowhere. It grew out of the Ultima series, launched in the early 1980s. On the Apple II, Ultima IV (1985) displayed its texts in 8-bit, monospaced, angular characters drawn within extremely small grids. The uppercase letters—tight and abrupt—resembled Roman capitals filtered through the constraints of pixel grids. On DOS, Ultima V (1988) retained this geometric rigor but slightly refined the spacing and proportions.

With Ultima VII (1992), the series evolved again: letters became smoother, diagonals softened, and spacing more precise. Text appeared denser yet more fluid—an aesthetic shift that paved the way for Ultima Online. Over the years, the typography of the franchise transitioned from a purely utilitarian function to a form that carried atmosphere and meaning, balancing technical clarity with the evocation of a medieval dream.

The Bitmap Aesthetic: Drawing Letters Pixel by Pixel

In Ultima Online, every letter was literally a small drawing. At a time when anti-aliasing was not yet implemented in game interfaces, every curve had to be constructed as a mosaic of luminous squares. The fonts of the classic client were stored in a file called fonts.mul, a kind of digital codex containing full bitmap glyph sheets. Each sheet defined a complete font—an image grid where each character occupied a fixed frame.

Designers worked within tight technical boundaries: 640Ă—480 or 800Ă—600 pixel resolutions, 256-color palettes, later upgraded to 16-bit (5-6-5) display, and very limited video memory. Diagonals in letters such as v, w, or y were built using regular pixel steps to avoid jagged edges. Contours were sometimes drawn with a light outline stroke to preserve contrast over darker backgrounds. The x-height, relatively tall for the time, ensured comfortable reading on blurry CRT screens.

Uppercase letters were compact and heavy, with condensed M and W shapes and thick vertical stems. Lowercase letters were more fluid, their rhythm inspired by Carolingian and Italian chancery scripts. The result was a distinctive interplay between rigid geometry and calligraphic grace—a mixture of medieval austerity and Renaissance elegance.

This writing system, both handcrafted and functional, embodied the dual nature of Ultima Online: a medieval-fantasy universe rendered tangible through the constraints of early digital craftsmanship.

Making a Font in 1997: Between Craft and Engineering

Creating a video game typeface in 1997 was a balancing act between artistry and technical precision. Designers combined vector tools and manual pixel work. Letterforms were often first sketched in Adobe Illustrator or Macromedia FreeHand, then redrawn pixel by pixel within a grid of 8 to 16 pixels in height. These tests were performed directly on cathode-ray tube monitors to evaluate readability under real display conditions.

Once finalized, the fonts were exported as BMP sheets and manually integrated into the game client. Character encoding relied on Windows-1252, the Western European standard of the time, limiting the total number of characters to 256. International versions required separate font sheets—English, German, French, Polish, and so on. Each modification meant redrawing an entire bitmap grid and reinjecting it into the fonts.mul file.

This rigid process ensured perfect visual stability. Every glyph appeared exactly as drawn, with no rasterization surprises or scaling artifacts. The sharp, unfiltered rendering gave Ultima Online’s texts a rough, engraved appearance—an aesthetic that has since become iconic.

The Revival: Blaze Type Between Homage and Reinvention

More than twenty-five years later, that writing system still lives on. The Ultima Online community has never stopped extracting, editing, and reconstructing its original fonts. Tools such as UO Fiddler and UO Fonts Editor made it possible to rebuild authentic versions, add missing characters, or modernize outlines for HD displays.

It is within this tradition of rediscovery that the French type foundry Blaze Type, led by Mathieu Salvaggio, has undertaken its own revival. Fascinated by the formal richness of Ultima Online’s letters, the team set out to reinterpret the original typeface as a contemporary family.

Released online at the end of October, for Halloween, this new type family consists of a variable OpenType vector version designed for both editorial and web use. The lowercase letters, elegant and fluid, draw from Carolingian and Renaissance chancery scripts, while the uppercase letters evoke the decorated initials of medieval manuscripts—ornamental yet structurally balanced.

More than a simple revival, Blaze Type’s project proposes a modern reading of a video game heritage, paying tribute to the meticulous craftsmanship of the 1990s while expanding its aesthetic reach into new contexts.

From Bitmap to OpenType: Reinterpreting a Digital Artifact

The challenge undertaken by the French type foundry Blaze Type was therefore not to digitize an existing font, but to reconstruct its underlying design logic.

The project began with an extensive study of the original bitmap letters. Rather than smoothing their outlines mechanically, every glyph was carefully redrawn from scratch. The objective was to preserve the proportions, spacing and visual rhythm that gave the original its unmistakable personality while translating these qualities into Bézier curves suitable for contemporary typography.

This approach required distinguishing between characteristics that were intrinsic to the design and those that resulted purely from technological limitations. Features such as the relatively low stroke contrast, orthogonal terminals, slab-like serifs and compact proportions proved to be genuine stylistic decisions worth preserving. Conversely, the irregularities caused by the coarse pixel grid—stair-stepped diagonals, simplified curves or optical distortions—had to be interpreted rather than reproduced literally. The resulting typeface is therefore neither a facsimile nor a nostalgic recreation, but a contemporary interpretation of the original design.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the revival lies in its treatment of the relationship between uppercase and lowercase. The original bitmap font already suggested a subtle tension between decorative Lombardic-inspired capitals and comparatively modern lowercase forms. Blaze Type chose to embrace this historical ambiguity rather than resolve it. The capitals preserve their medieval flavour and monumental presence, while the lowercase develop a smoother rhythm influenced by Carolingian and Renaissance chancery writing. The dialogue between these two traditions gives the typeface an intentionally anachronistic character that mirrors the visual language of Ultima Online itself—a fictional Middle Ages assembled from multiple historical references rather than a faithful reconstruction of any single period.

The project also expands the possibilities of the original design. Instead of limiting itself to a single bitmap reconstruction, Blaze Type developed three complementary interpretations. Two bitmap versions—a solid cut and an outline cut—remain faithful to the pixel aesthetic and are intended for retro-inspired interfaces, games and screen graphics. Alongside them, a fully vectorised OpenType version extends the design beyond its original technical limitations, allowing it to function comfortably in print, branding, editorial design and digital publishing while preserving the rhythm and proportions inherited from the 1997 source.

The name An Corp is itself a tribute to Ultima Online. In the game's magical vocabulary, An Corp is the "Word of Power" used for the Resurrection spell—a fitting metaphor for a project whose ambition was not merely to imitate an old bitmap font, but to bring it back to life in a contemporary typographic form. During the research process, Blaze Type also established contact with former members of the original development team. These exchanges, together with archival research, suggest that much of the early font work was likely created by Micael Priest, who passed away in 2018. The revival therefore stands not only as a reinterpretation of a beloved game interface, but also as a tribute to one of the largely invisible designers who contributed to its enduring visual identity.

Ultimately, An Corp demonstrates that a bitmap font can become far more than a historical curiosity. By translating a technical artifact into a contemporary OpenType family, Blaze Type reveals the quality of a design that was largely hidden behind the technological constraints of its time. What once existed as a handful of pixels on a CRT monitor can now be appreciated as a coherent typeface in its own right—capable of living far beyond the world that first gave it meaning.
